Helfer was raised in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada and was the daughter of Dennis and Elaine Helfer. [2] She is of German, English, Swedish and Norwegian heritage. She studied at the William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler in Alberta. She worked and lived on the family's farm alongside her three sisters: Trena, Tammy and Tara.
